The Beam Diagnostics Group (DIG) of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) has as main activity to provide tools for the continuous monitoring of several characteristics of the electron and photon beams. Besides monitoring the characteristics of beam, the group also is responsible for quick feedback systems and for the project of electromagnetic components, such as sensors and actuators located along the accelerators. Those components, integrated to the feedback systems, aim to guarantee the stability of the electron beam, keeping it below a pre-determined value.

 

Thus, the beam diagnostic is an activity directly related with the quality of the synchrotron light beam present in the experimental stations used by the scientists almost 24 hours a day on their researches.

 

In the current synchrotron light source UVX, the fluctuations of position and dimensions of the beam must be kept below a tenth of a millimeter, size close to the width of a hair, while the beam travels across the almost 100 meters of circumference of the storage ring.

 

In the new synchrotron light source Sirius, the requirements for the stability in position and dimensions of the beam should be of the order of a few micrometers, that is, thousandths of a millimeter, smaller than a red blood cell. For a circumference of more than 500 meters, the challenges keeping the stability will be even bigger.

 

The Beam Diagnostics Group is also responsible for keeping and improving the synchronization systems of the accelerators and beamlines. These systems are responsible for generating electrical and optical signals with temporal accuracy in the order of some picoseconds, that is, a millionth of a millionth of a second.
