The Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) hosts and organizes conferences and other national and international scientific events that bring together researchers and students to discuss the latest developments related to accelerator physics and engineering, as well as synchrotron light techniques. The LNLS will be hosting the XVIII International Small Angle Scattering Conference (SAS2021). By 2021, the construction of the Brazilian 4th generation Synchrotron Light Source, Sirius, will be achieved and the renewed small-angle scattering capabilities will be in their first years of operation. Hosting the SAS2021 will thus offer a timely opportunity to promote stronger scientific interactions with worldwide researchers, and will also allow a greater participation of the Brazilian community, in continuous growth, and strengthening the link in small-angle scattering between research and industry.
IPAC (International Particle Accelerator Conference) is a large annual conference in the field of particle accelerators that, in 2016, had its 7th edition held in the Korean city of Busan. Brazil was chosen for the first time, to host the 12th edition of the event, scheduled for 2021 and the National Synchrotron Light Laboratory will be your local organizer.
The conference brings together about 1,200 scientists accelerators, engineers, students and entrepreneurs from more than 30 countries to discuss the latest advances in the field of particle accelerators, synchrotron light sources, free electron laser, and associated instrumentation. The conference also includes the participation of about 100 exhibitors of equipment and products related to the field, and special meetings of funding agencies to science, workshops with specific topics, and other satellite events.
LNLS hosted, from 25 to 28 October 2016, the eleventh edition of the international workshop on PCaPAC accelerators (International Workshop Personal Computers and Particle Accelerator Controls 2016). The event is traditionally focused on low cost control systems for accelerators using PC technology for data acquisition and control, and new technologies. Among the topics to be covered are control systems, tools and user interface (including mobile systems), cybersecurity, hardware technologies, modern procurement systems and data analysis, database and related topics.
The High Pressures Workshop (2015 IUCr High-Pressure Workshop), held between September 12th and 15th, 2015, addressed the recent scientific advances in crystallography techniques under high pressures. The presentations covered topics such as crystal structures, phase transitions and their kinetics, synthesis of new materials, planetary and earth sciences, soft and biological materials, physical and chemical properties, theory and computation, as well as the development of techniques for studies under high pressures in laboratories in universities, and in synchrotron and neutron laboratories. The workshop was attended by 50 external participants.
The event is part of a series of workshops promoted in partnership with the Commission of High Pressures of IUCr (International Union of Crystallography). First held in 1996, the workshop was previously held at the ESRF (1997), APS (1998), Spring-8 (2000), Orsay (2001), Berkeley (2003), Saskatoon (2004), Dubna (2006), Oxford (2007), Harbin (2009), Gatlinburg (2010), Mito (2012), and in Hamburg (2013).
The SyncLight 2015, promoted with funding from FAPESP under the program “São Paulo Schools of Advanced Science” aimed to present new experimental possibilities that the latest generation synchrotron light sources are opening for scientific research in different disciplines.
Held between July 13th and 24th, SyncLight 2015 was attended by 96 young researchers of 27 nationalities, coming from 17 different countries. The two weeks of the School promoted training for master and doctorate students and post-doctorate fellows in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, medicine, and materials science and engineering, among others.
The interdisciplinary of the school is designed to promote profitable exchanges between students and researchers related to these disciplines. Organized jointly by the LNLS and the American Physical Society (APS), the School had the additional objective of stimulating and preparing the new generation of users who will benefit from the new synchrotron light source Sirius in the coming years.
The Latin American Summit Meeting on Biological Crystallography and Complementary Methods, held between September 22nd and 24th, 2014, was the largest Latin American event in the official program of the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr2014).
Promoted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), the event brought together leading international scientists and decision makers in Science and Technology around the theme of Structural Molecular Biology.
The event promoted the exchange of ideas about the possible applications of crystallography in complex biological phenomena, and consisted of a series of scientific presentations by visiting scientists, coming from various Latin American institutions. The event was attended by the Nobel laureate, Ada Yonath.
