Quati Beamline

The QUATI (Quick X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy for Time and space resolved experiments) beamline will be dedicated to high-quality X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments, with temporal and spatial resolution on a millisecond scale and in situ conditions: XANES (X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure), EXAFS (Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure) and XES (X-ray Emission Spectroscopy). Furthermore, it intends to combine X-ray techniques with mass spectrometry, Raman and Infrarred Spectrometers, as an aim of investigating different aspects it shows in a single experiment.

The energy range will cover from 4.5 to 35 keV, allowing it to work, in K edge, from Titanium to Xenon, and the rest of the periodic table elements in L edges. The beam size will be variable, from 15 x 10 μm2 to 5 x 0,6 mm2, for experiments with heterogeneous materials. Beam with larger dimensions will be mostly used on sensitive materials due to high photons flux density that can damage them.

With the high flux achieved in this beamline, users will be able to study the structure of materials at high temperatures, under gas flow or pressure under operando conditions, benefiting areas such as catalysis, materials science, nanotechnology, environmental and life sciences.

QUATI is in the final stages of the project. Its optical elements and hutches have been specified and its experimental station is in the final phase of development.

EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES

The available techniques will be:

  • XANES (X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure),
  • EXAFS (Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure)
  • XES (X-ray Emission Spectroscopy)
  • XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence)
  • XRD (X-ray Diffraction)
  • Raman
  • Mass Spectrometry
  • Infrared Spectroscopy

Several sample environments can be used in QUATI, such as cryostats, ovens, and multiple ex-situ sample holder systems. The line can also house complex instrumentation and samples holders brought by users to be installed on the line.

LAYOUT & OPTICAL ELEMENTS

The main optical elements of the QUATI project are a collimating mirror (M1), a double crystal monochromator (DCM), and a focusing mirror (M2).

Element Type Position [m] Description
Source Magnetic dipole 0 3.2 T
M1 First mirror 15 Vertical collimation, 2.25 mrad. Plane mirror. Stripes: Rh, Pt, Si.
DCM Double Crystal Monochromator 24 Monochromatization
M2  Second mirror 30 Vertical and horizontal focalization, 2.25 mrad. Toroidal mirror. Stripes:  Rh, Pt.
