Ricardo Rodrigues honored by CNPq and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences

Engineer and physicist Ricardo Rodrigues was awarded the title of CNPQ Researcher Emeritus at the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Award for Science and Technology

On May 8, engineer and physicist Ricardo Rodrigues was awarded the title of CNPQ Researcher Emeritus at the Almirante Álvaro Alberto Award for Science and Technology ceremony promoted by the MCTI, CNPq, and the Brazilian Navy. The award recognizes Brazilian scientists who have made outstanding contributions to the country’s science and technology.

Deceased in 2020, the honor was bestowed on his children Kevin Liu Rodrigues and Erica Rodrigues at a joint solemn session of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), held in Rio de Janeiro.

A pioneer of synchrotron light in Brazil, Professor Ricardo Rodrigues, as he was better known, was the main person responsible for designing the two Brazilian synchrotron accelerators, UVX and its successor, Sirius. His remarkable creativity, dedication, and courage in facing technical challenges were fundamental to developing accelerator engineering in the country, which is now internationally recognized.
