The event registered a record of public, gathering around 16 thousand people in the campus
On June 29, 2019, the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) held the fourth edition of its open day called "Ciência Aberta" (Open Science). Students, families and children of all ages participated in guided visits through the National Laboratories, hands-on activities, informal lectures by researchers, among other attractions. This year, the new Brazilian synchrotron light source, Sirius, was open for public visitation, which included booths and exhibitions covering several aspects of such complex machine, from design to scientific applications.

New Brazilian synchrotron light source will allow unprecedented experiments benefitting many fields
In the early evening of March 8th, when the campus of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) was mostly silent, shouts of celebration echoed through the corridors of the Sirius building, the new Brazilian synchrotron light source. Inside, the team responsible for the installation of the particle accelerators reached another milestone: the first loop around the second among its three accelerators: the booster. It is a finely tuned equipment, along which the electrons must travel with micrometric precision.

The international event WIRMS 2019, promoted by the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS) located at the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), will highlight the latest advances in experimental techniques in the infrared range in synchrotron light sources and free electrons lasers. In addition, the meeting will bring together about 100 experts in the field, including users and researchers.

Registrations are open for the workshop Synchrotron Techniques Under High Pressure (PRESSYNC). PRESSYNC is taking place between July 31st and August 2nd, 2019, in the campus of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM). PRESSYNC is a satellite workshop to the 27th International Conference on High Pressure Science and Technology (AIRAPT27).

A special call for Proposals is open for the LNLS beamlines listed below. This call concerns the beamtime available during the first semester of 2019, from January 29th to July 31st.
This special call for proposals is intended to supply beamtime for the users during the transition period from the UVX to the Sirius synchrotron light sources.

New Synchrotron Light Source is the largest and most complex research structure ever buit in Brazil
The Brazilian President, Michel Temer, and the Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications, Gilberto Kassab, participated last Wednesday (14th) in the ceremony commemorating the first stage of the new Brazilian Synchrotron Light Source, Sirius, in the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM), in Campinas (SP). Started in 2012, Sirius is the largest project in Brazilian science, a state-of-the-art research infrastructure, strategic for cutting-edge scientific research and for finding solutions to global problems in areas such as health, agriculture, energy and the environment.

Debora de Paiva Magalhães, who is part of the Detectors Group of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), received the Didier Isabelle Award for best oral presentation by a student at the 14th International Symposium on Radiation Physics (ISRP-14), which was held in Cordoba, Argentina, between October 7th and 11th.

French physicist was Director-General of the largest European synchrotron between 1993 and 2001 and LNLS’ Scientific Director from 2009 to 2013
In ceremony held on the morning of August 29th, Yves Pierre Petroff became Director of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). Yves Petroff was LNLS' Scientific Director from November 2009 to March 2013. During the ceremony, Rogério Cesar de Cerqueira Leite, Chairman of the Board of Directors of CNPEM, and Antonio José Roque da Silva, CNPEM's Director-General and former LNLS Director, highlighted Pretroff's competence and his history within LNLS.

Antonio José Roque da Silva takes over campus management and continues to lead the Sirius Project
In ceremony held on July 12th, Antonio José Roque da Silva took over as director general of the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM). Roque da Silva remains as director of the Sirius Project, the new Brazilian synchrotron light source. The appointment to the position was approved by the CNPEM Board of Directors after nomination from the Selection Committee, composed mostly by external members.
